As a left-handed designer, I approach my work from an alternate angle where an exploratory, hands-on methodolgy drives my creative practice.I earned my BFA with a concentration in graphic design and a minor in film studies from the University of Georgia. During my undergraduate studies, I interned at the Georgia Museum of Art, assisting with the organization and design of museum assets. My primary interests are in typography, publication design, identity design, and playing with time based media. The intersection of the more traditional fine arts, graphic and digital design, and other disciplines is an integral part of my process, especially for print, user experience and user interface, and animation design. Working from the&nbsp;33° means seeing so-called accidents, glitches, and imperfections in design as opportunities for serendipity and discovery that thus drive my creative direction. Everything written in my words in this book is set in my “left-handed typeface” called Propitious Hand. Everything in the book is related to 33, including the grid which is revealed by two lines on the edge, trisecting each page. As a part of the methods of display team, my primary contribution was conceptualizing the show, constructing our “scroll bars” horizontal poster displays, and designing, producing, and installing the wall vinyl mural. My interest in accidental rips when folding paper began this project, but I found the composition of the strips of paper scraps in the scanner to be intriguing. Responding to this moment of serendipity and to the agency of the paper and scanner, I created five ‘‘scanimations’’ exploring various ways paper could come to life through movement. For the second part of this project, I revisited my interest in paper rips. I zoomed in and cropped my scans, overlaying photos of mostly landscapes and architecture. I noticed how the roughness of the straight rip seam appeared similar to a horizon line or skyline. To highlight this further, I designed a small photobook and blew up the images through a view-master. This created an intimate viewing experience by playing with scale and transparency. <img width="949" height="1345" width_o="949" height_o="1345" exist in my bedroom. I gave myself strict parameters and reconstructed the objects as minimally as possible. I then reconstructed an aerial view of my bedroom in a poster. In constrast to this rigidness, I played with chance and variability using alignment and pathfinder tools in Illustrator and InDesign that lead to two technical books. Each section of this project is overlayed on top of Tolkien’s essay about storytelling: ‘‘On Fairy Stories’’. As the universe of this project is built through my design and others’, this alternative universe overtakes the other one. The final section, Universe, expands on my own designs by giving sticker sheets of objects to my peers to created worlds of their own, playing with alignment off of the computer. The natural looping of the letterforms is reflected in certain glyphs while all letters are characterized by soft, rounded corners. Sinistral Hand is a faithful representation of the actual forms that are created with a calligraphy pen. The result is a typeface more suitable for display. My approach to further develop and transform this Sinistral Hand is to design a typeface that honors the unusual characteristics that appear as a result of the writing system while making a typeface better suited for body text. The result is a rotoscope animation of my walk from my Boston apartment to the studio accompanied by an original piano score. I filled almost 30 pages with illustrated frames. My decision to draw everything by hand and to highlight the colorful vellum that I drew on was influenced by 20th century experimental animators like Oskar Fischinger, Stan Brackhage, and especially Robert Breer. I used whatever materials I had available to me, which led to the changing paper colors as well as uneven line weights through the use of different pens. The first takes a musical approach. I hand drew the letters and digitally stretched them to appear like brass instruments being pulled and pushed as if a ‘loud ode’ is being played at the viewer. The second design evokes nervousness through manically scribbled lines in both the drawing and type.
